NCAA Game Summary - Delaware State at Ohio State

(Saturday, December 19th)

Final Score: (18) Ohio State 60, Delaware State 44

Columbus, OH (Sports Network) - William Buford scored 18 points, and David Lighty added 12, as the 18th-ranked Ohio State Buckeyes beat the Delaware State Hornets, 60-44, at Value City Arena.

Dallas Lauderdale chipped in 11 points for the Buckeyes (9-2), who have won three in a row since a loss to Butler. Jon Diebler contributed eight points and six rebounds.

"We were pressing and trapping, anything to try and speed the tempo up," Buckeyes coach Thad Matta said. "They may be the most disciplined team I've ever seen in my life. I would have had a hard time in that one as a player. Our guys had to focus for the full 40 minutes today."

Frisco Sandridge led the Hornets (4-5) with 13 points and seven boards, although Delaware State dropped its fourth straight game. Greg Smith had nine points in defeat.

"We were outmanned in every aspect of the game, but to still manage to be in it is a tribute to this team," Hornets coach Greg Jackson said. "We really wanted to limit their total number of possessions and keep them off the transition game. We obviously don't have as much talent as this team and I expect Ohio State to be very successful this year."

Delaware State held an early 7-5 edge, but Jeremie Simmons drilled two consecutive three-pointers, and Ohio State never relinquished the lead.

The Buckeyes' largest lead in the first half was 23-15 with 1:54 remaining. OSU took a 25-17 lead into the locker room.

Ohio State led by around 11 points for most the second half. Delaware State got to within 40-31 with 9:11 remaining, but a Buford jumper with 4 1/2 minutes left put the hosts head by 15, 52-37.

The biggest OSU lead of 56-39 came with just 2:36 remaining, and the Buckeyes cruised to the finish.
