GAME NOTES: Bruiser Flint takes aim at his 200th win coaching at Drexel as the
Dragons kick off the 2012-13 season on the road against Mid-American
Conference foe Kent State.
The Dragons are coming off a 29-win season which broke the school record. Last
year they went 16-2 in conference play, winning the Colonial Athletic
Association. With four returning starters, including the CAA Preseason Player
of the Year, another stellar campaign is expected.
After a 21-12 season last year, it will be tough for Coach Rob Senderoff to
match the success of his first season with Kent State, especially with only
one starter returning. The Golden Flashes will host Drexel in the start of a
five-game homestand to begin their season.
These teams have met once before with the Dragons earning a 73-66 win in a
2011 BracketBuster game at Drexel.
Drexel will be led by junior guard Frantz Massenat who was named this year's
CAA Preseason Player of the Year. Last year, Massenat led the conference in
assists and three-point percentage. He will be joined by other returning
starters in sophomore guard Damion Lee (last year's CAA Rookie of the Year),
senior guard Derrick Thomas and senior forward Daryl McCoy. Junior forward
Dartaye Ruffin will be replacing Samme Givens inside. The season looks bright
for this talented, veteran squad.
Kent State has just one returning starter in senior guard Randal Holt, who was
a Honorable Mention All-MAC selection a year ago. Holt missed the preseason
after getting knee surgery and just returned to practice last Thursday and is
expected to play in this season-opener. Last year's sixth man Chris Evans, a
6-8 junior forward, is the only other player in the lineup to play significant
minutes last season. Senderoff has a tough road ahead in order to favorably
compare to last year, as his team's inexperience could be a problem early on.
A lot is expected of the Dragons this year who should earn a convincing win in
their opener. Behind the play of Massenat, this team will not go unnoticed
