Omaha shot the ball well in the first half, connecting on 54.8 percent of their field goal tries, including 7-of-16 from beyond the 3-point arc, as they took a slim, 43-41, lead at halftime. South Dakota kept it close by draining 6-of-12 from 3-point range, part of a 44.1 percent shooting performance in the first half.

After the break, the Mavericks continued to have the hot hand, making 57.6 percent of their field goal tries, including 6-of-10 from 3-point distance. Staying on their heels, the Coyotes hit on 47.4 percent of their field goal attempts and 5-of-12 from 3-point range. Trailing by 13 points with just under eight minutes to play, South Dakota went on a 16-4 run to pull within one, 81-80, but never managed to come all the way back. A Myles 3-point attempt with three seconds remaining that would have tied the contest was off the mark and two free throws by Carter sealed the victory for the Mavericks.
