Sevilla held at home by Levante
Seville, Spain (Sports Network) - Sevilla and Levante scored seven minutes apart in the first half of their 1-1 draw at the Estadio Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan on Saturday, a result that does not do either side any favors.
Alvaro Negredo opened the scoring for Sevilla in the 21st minute, but Arouna Kone continued his fine form by equalizing for the visitors in the 28th minute.
Sevilla had a golden opportunity to get a late winner when it was awarded a penalty kick three minutes from time, but Negredo was denied from the spot by a save from Gustavo Munua.
The result leaves both teams squarely outside of a Champions League qualification spot. Levante, in fifth place, sits two points shy of fourth- place Malaga while Sevilla sits five points adrift despite climbing to sixth place with Saturday's result.
Sporting Gijon 2, Rayo Vallecano 1
Gijon, Spain - Sporting Gijon took a big step toward survival on Saturday by claiming a vital 2-1 win over Rayo Vallecano at El Molinon.
Gaston Sangoy gave the home side the lead in the 17th minute. The two teams looked destined to split the points after Mikel Labaka had equalized for Rayo six minutes into the second half, but substitute Mate Bilic netted a free kick 12 minutes from time to see Sporting steal the win.
Sporting Gijon remains in the relegation zone on 31 points but now sits just five points from safety. Rayo Vallecano's three straight losses leaves the club stuck on 40 points.
Mallorca 1, Real Zaragoza 0
Mallorca, Spain - Real Zaragoza suffered its third defeat from its last four La Liga contests as it fell to Mallorca, 1-0, at the Estadio Son Moix on Saturday.
Victor Casadesus provided the lone goal of the affair, heading home a corner kick in the first half to lift Mallorca to 43 points this season.
Real Zaragoza remains five points clear of safety, sitting second from bottom on 31 points.
