McKay's hat trick leads Inverness past Motherwell
Inverness, Scotland (Sports Network) - William McKay's hat trick propelled Inverness to a 4-3 home win over Motherwell on Saturday, allowing Inverness to maintain its hold on third place in the Scottish Premier League.
McKay tallied two goals in the opening 27 minutes while Andrew Shinnie chipped in another to put the home side in a commanding position in the first half hour of the contest.
But Motherwell began to chip away at its three-goal deficit when James McFadden tallied a goal in the 36th minute.
Michael Higdon converted a penalty kick shortly after halftime for Motherwell to make it a 3-2 game and McKay missed a chance to complete his hat trick in the 63rd minute when he failed to convert from the penalty spot.
McFadden equalized for the visitors just one minute later, bringing his team all the way back, but Henrik Ojamaa was sent off in the 73rd, reducing Motherwell to 10 men.
And McKay took advantage in the 84th, completing his hat trick to keep Inverness one point above fourth-place St Johnstone, which secured a 1-0 win at Dundee United courtesy of Liam Craig's 38th-minute goal.
The other match on Saturday saw Hearts cruise to a comfortable 3-0 victory against St Mirren, which remains eight points clear of the bottom spot in the league.
