Dolphins part ways with K Carpenter

Davie, FL (Sports Network) - The Miami Dolphins have released Dan Carpenter, the team's kicker over the past five seasons, the club announced Wednesday.

The move was not unexpected, as Miami selected University of Florida All- American Caleb Sturgis in the fifth round of this past April's draft to presumably take over the position.

Carpenter made the Dolphins as an undrafted free agent in 2008 and was selected to the Pro Bowl a season later after connecting on 25-of-28 field goal attempts and compiling 112 points. He also holds the franchise record for the longest field goal made, a 60-yarder against Cleveland on Dec. 5, 2010.

The 27-year-old finished with a career-low 92 points last season, however, while hitting on 22-of-27 field goals.

During his tenure with the Dolphins, Carpenter went 127-of-155 on field goals (81.9 percent) and missed just one point-after attempt in 155 tries.

Sturgis may have sealed Carpenter's fate by drilling a 58-yard field goal in last week's preseason game at Jacksonville.
