Iowa City, IA (Sports Network) - Jake Knott recorded a game-clinching interception for Iowa State as the Cyclones claimed the Cy-Hawk Trophy with a 9-6 victory over the Iowa Hawkeyes in a defensive minded battle between the in- state rivals at Kinnick Stadium.
Steele Jantz led Iowa State (1-1) by completing 24-of-36 passes for 241 yards and a touchdown, but he also threw a pair of interceptions. Jantz also recorded a team-high 40 rushing yards on 14 carries. Aaron Horne racked up 73 yards and the game's only touchdown on six catches, while James White contributed 65 yards on seven grabs.
James Vandenberg struggled under center for Iowa (1-1), completing only 20- of-42 attempts for 236 yards with two interceptions. Damon Bullock was limited to 53 rushing yards on 22 carries. Keenan David had a game-high 75 yards on four catches for the Hawkeyes, who now have a two-game losing streak in their rivalry with ISU. Iowa's defense forced four turnovers in the losing effort.
Jantz put Iowa State on top early by completing a five-yard touchdown pass to Horne with just under 10 minutes left to play in the opening period. Edwin Arceo's extra point attempt was unsuccessful, which left the Cyclones' lead at 6-0.
Iowa scored its first points later in the first quarter when Mike Meyer connected on a 23-yard field goal to cut ISU's lead in half.
Iowa State pushed its lead back up to six when Edwin Arceo's 22-yard field goal at the 11:13 mark of the second frame. Neither team managed to score again in the first half, which sent the game into the intermission with the Cyclones ahead, 9-3.
After a scoreless third quarter, the Hawkeyes narrowed the gap as Meyer made a field goal from 21 yards out with left the trailing, 9-6.
Iowa would get no closer as the Cyclones' defense forced the Hawkeyes into two three-and-outs and a turnover on downs before Knott's game-sealing interception.
Iowa State's defense held Iowa to 304 yards of total offense in the game.
