Rick Campbell named RedBlacks' first head coach

Ottawa, ON (SportsNetwork.com) - The Ottawa RedBlacks have named Rick Campbell the franchise's first head coach.

Campbell has 15 years of coaching experience in the CFL and recently completed a two-year stint as the defensive coordinator of the Calgary Stampeders.

"I'd like to thank (general manager) Marcel Desjardins, (OSEG Sports president) Jeff Hunt and the OSEG ownership for this incredible opportunity," Campbell said in a release issued by the team on Friday. "I'd also like to thank coach John Hufnagel in Calgary and the other coaches and players I've worked with and learned from over the years."

Campbell's top priority is constructing a roster, beginning with the Dec. 16 expansion draft, and is set on "creating an environment for players and other coaches that's all about football, establishing our team identity and winning games."

Under Campbell's guidance, the Stampeders' defense led the CFL with 63 sacks with and ranked second in fewest points allowed (22.9 per game) last season.

"Rick is a coach who earned this opportunity," Desjardins said in a statement. "He started coaching at the university level and then, over the next 15 years, served as a CFL assistant coach on offense, defense and special teams. Rick did it right, learning his craft from some very good football men, and I'm delighted to welcome him to the RedBlacks organization."
