GAME NOTES: The Wofford Terriers look to tip-off their Southern Conference slate on the right note when they visit Belk Arena to challenge the Davidson Wildcats.
The Terriers picked up their second win in a row on Wednesday as they took down Gardner-Webb, 54-42. the victory improved Wofford's record to 4-5 and give its a chance to climb back to .500 after its atrocious 1-4 start to the season. Coach Mike Young also guided his squad to a 70-55 decision over Winthrop, but he has yet to find any success in five road games so far. The Terriers are not a run-and-gun team as they are producing a mere 59.1 ppg and limiting their opposition to 58.7 ppg.
Bob McKillop's Wildcats suffered a tough 73-69 setback to its cross-county undefeated rival Charlotte on Wednesday. The loss dropped Davidson to 4-4 overall, but it is still 1-0 in conference action after its 81-55 rout of Chattanooga last Saturday. The Wildcats had a very difficult non-conference journey as they suffered losses to New Mexico (86-81) and Gonzaga (81-67), but also managed to take down Vanderbilt (75-62) and West Virginia (63-60). Davidson is ranked second in the conference in scoring offense (74.6 ppg) and scoring margin, with a 5.0 point average margin of victory.
This will be the 96th meeting in history between these schools on the hardwood. Davidson owns a 71-24 all-time series lead in the rivalry that began in 1912. The Wildcats swept the season series in 2011-12.
Wofford was impressive on the defensive end of the floor versus Gardner-Webb, as it held the Runnin' Bulldogs to 33.3 percent shooting including a 2-of-18 mark from 3-point range. Gardner-Webb held a 32-23 advantage in the rebounding battle, but Wofford managed to stay in front by hitting 40.5 percent of its field goal tries and 18-of-22 at the charity stripe. Sophomore forward Lee Skinner paced the team with 19 points while guard Karl Cochran provided 10 points. Cochran, who was named the 2012 SoCon Freshman of the Year, is the team's leading scorer with 16.7 ppg while Skinner (12.4 ppg) is second in points and the team's top rebounder with seven boards per outing. Freshman guard Spencer Collins will be making his SoCon debut after netting 9.9 ppg in his first nine collegiate contests.
The Wildcats lost their last time out despite shooting 48.9 percent from the field and 45.5 percent from distance due to a 34-25 loss in the rebounding battle. McKillop had to be displeased with the four-point loss after his team missed seven foul shots as well. Neither side could pull away in a very back- and-forth second half, but the 49ers' Pierria Henry scored six points in the final 1:14 to lift Charlotte to the decision. Jake Cohen led four Wildcats in double figures with 15 points. The senior forward is second on the team in both scoring and rebounding with 11.8 points and 5.6 boards per contest. Junior forward De'Mon Brooks is pacing the squad in both categories with 16.3 points and 6.3 rebounds per game. Davidson's experienced senior backcourt of JP Kuhlman and Nik Cochran is combining for 18.4 points and 8.9 assists per contest.
The Wildcats will be a dangerous team in the postseason due to the experience they gained from their difficult non-conference slate. Davidson lost just two SoCon games last season as it won both the regular season and conference tournament championships. There is no reason to believe it is not capable repeating that feat in 2012-13.
