GAME NOTES: The Cal Poly Mustangs shoot for their first four-game win streak of the season on Wednesday night, as they tangle with the Cal State Fullerton Titans in Big West Conference action.
Twice this season the Mustangs have won three straight games, the latest run coming with victories over the likes of Pacific, UC Davis and UC Santa Barbara, all at home. The most recent victory for the squad was a 67-49 blowout of the Gauchos which moved Cal Poly to an impressive 10-1 in its own building and 8-5 in league play as well.
While Cal Poly entered the week third in the conference standings, Fullerton is further behind at the seventh spot with a mark of only 5-8. The Titans were in action over the weekend and suffered a lopsided 86-66 setback versus UC Irvine on the road, which means the squad has been outscored in the two meetings with the Anteaters this season by a combined 45 points. The loss was the second in a row and the fifth in six games for the Titans as well.
Cal Poly leads the all-time series against the Titans by a 33-23 count. The teams will complete their season series in the final game of the regular season on March 9 on the Mustangs' home floor.
Cal Poly allowed UCSB's Alan Williams to register a huge double-double over the weekend with 24 points and 17 rebounds, not to mention four blocked shots, but even all of that was not enough to offset the hosts in their pursuit of another win. Hitting 7-of-16 shots behind the 3-point line, Dylan Royer finished with 23 points for the hosts, while Kyle Odister produced another 11 points for a team that somehow came up with the win despite shooting only 35.0 percent from the field.
Missing the game against the Gauchos was Chris Eversley who is listed as questionable for Wednesday's outing with a sprained ankle. Then again, Cal Poly didn't need their leading scorer necessarily, but it would be nice to have someone who is scoring 15.6 ppg back in the lineup sooner rather than later. Royer, responsible for 41.4 percent accuracy beyond the arc these days, checks in with another 10.0 ppg for a squad that is posting a mere 65.9 ppg at the moment.
The Titans shot just 30.8 percent from the field in the first half against UC Irvine over the weekend, leaving the visitors behind by 14 points at the break and en route to the awkward loss. Only one starter scored in double figures for the Titans as Alex Harris tallied 12 points, while James Douglas came off the bench and dropped in a team-best 14 points on 4-of-7 shooting behind the 3-point line. Defensively, Fullerton forced 16 turnovers, but at the same time allowed UCI to convert 51.5 percent from the field.
Still one of the top scoring teams in the country with 80.5 ppg, the Titans have been held to just 66 points in each of the last two outings. A starter in every game thus far, D.J. Seeley leads the group in scoring with 18.2 ppg, one of three players to put up double figures entering this week. A 39.9 percent shooter beyond the arc, Seeley is also the one who is at the top of the assists (100) and steals (53) lists as well. Kwame Vaughn (17.6 ppg) and Sammy Yeager (15.8 ppg) have certainly had their share of passes from Seeley result in points for Fullerton.
Fullerton has not looked like itself in recent games and that might be the opportunity that Cal Poly needs in order to pick up an elusive win on the road.
