GAME NOTES: The Wofford Terriers conclude their five-game road trip on Friday night when they invade Devlin Fieldhouse in the Big Easy for a non-conference tilt against the Tulane Green Wave.
The Terriers picked up wins over Jacksonville (94-52) and Xavier (56-55) before suffering a 74-39 loss to Virginia in Charlottesville last Sunday to fall a game below .500. Wofford really needs to bounce back and submit a better performance as it will re-enter Southern Conference action when it returns home to face Appalachian State on Tuesday.
Tulane will also begin league play after this one, as Texas-El Paso is next on the slate. The Green Wave will try to take their winning streak, which currently sits at four, into Conference USA action. They have been playing exceptionally well of late, defeating Texas-Pan American (76-49), Pepperdine (69-54) and Hofstra (83-62) by double-digit margins before slipping past Alabama (53-50) on the road on Dec. 30.
Last season, Wofford defeated Tulane, 61-50, in the only previous meeting between these two schools.
Wofford prefers a slower tempo as it is scoring just 59.8 ppg while limiting the opposition to only 59.4 ppg. The team relies heavily upon sophomore guard Karl Cochran for production. The 6-1 guard powered the efforts against Jacksonville and Xavier by pouring in 49 total points in those contests, but he was held to 1-of-11 shooting from the floor and five points by Virginia. Not counting Spencer Collins, who went 5-of-9 for 17 points, Wofford made just 27.2 percent of its field goal attempts in its loss to the Cavaliers. Collins is the second-leading scorer on the squad with 11.3 ppg and Lee Skinner adds 10.6 points and 6.6 boards per outing.
The Green Wave relies on the three-headed monster of Josh Davis (18.4 ppg, 10.1 rpg), Ricky Tarrant (14.4 ppg, 3.0 apg) and Jordan Callahan (12.6 ppg, 37 3-PT FGs) for 67.5 percent of their 67.4 ppg. Davis charged the victory over Alabama by registering a double-double of 18 points and 12 boards while Callahan finished with 12 points after drilling a pair of clutch 3-pointers in the closing minutes. Tarrant went just 2-of-12 from the floor for five points versus the Crimson Tide, but the sophomore guard scored in double-figures in five consecutive games prior including a season-best 28-point outing against Hofstra.
Tulane has a few quality players on its roster and could be competitive in what is expected to be a weak C-USA. The Green Wave can make a statement against an inconsistent Wofford squad, which showed it is capable of upsets when it defeated the Musketeers in Cincinnati less than two weeks ago.
Sports Network Predicted Outcome: Tulane 70, Wofford 62
