GAME NOTES: The Georgia Bulldogs hope to put the brakes on a three-game losing streak on Saturday when they host the LSU Tigers in a Southeastern Conference matchup at Stegeman Coliseum.
Georgia's latest loss came at the hands of nationally-ranked Missouri on Wednesday, as the Bulldogs were blown out, 79-62. Vincent Williams poured in a game-high 23 points to pace Georgia, which had won four in a row before its current slide.
LSU, meanwhile, has also dropped three in a row after falling in overtime to South Carolina on Wednesday, 82-73. Anthony Hickey posted 15 of his team- leading 18 points during the second half and overtime to lead the Tigers, who are 0-3 in SEC play.
Hickey also grabbed seven rebounds to match a career-high and handed out four assists. For Hickey, it marked the sixth straight game he reached double figures.
Georgia, which is also searching for its first conference win, will be trying to reverse its fortunes against an LSU team that has beaten it in four of the last five meetings. The Tigers also lead the all-time series, 61-41.
Even though LSU boasts just a .432 field goal percentage, it actually scores 74.1 points per game by earning extra possessions with 14.7 offensive rebounds per tilt (third in SEC). Despite starting just three of 14 games, Shavon Coleman is the team's catalyst with 12.6 ppg, 8.3 rpg, and more than a block and a steal per outing. Andre Stringer (11.2 ppg) has made 30-of-77 shots from long range (.390), and Hickey (11.8 ppg) is among the best in the nation with 3.4 steals per game. Johnny O'Bryant III averages 10.4 ppg and grabs a 7.3 rpg, and Charles Carmouche chips in with 9.9 ppg and 3.9 apg.
Georgia has had trouble putting the ball in the basket, as it scores a dismal 59.7 ppg on 40.9 percent shooting from the floor. The team's struggles continued against Missouri, as it made good on just 21-of-46 field goal attempts (.457). Defensively though, the Bulldogs are holding their opponents to just a 40.6 percentage from the floor. Kentavious Caldwell-Pope has been the Bulldogs' only consistent option, as he nets 16.8 ppg, albeit on just 41.7 percent shooting from the field. Caldwell-Pope also leads the team in rebounding (6.4 rpg), steals (2.4 spg) and 3-point baskets (37). Nemanja Djurisic is the club's next-best scoring option, but he nets just 8.1 ppg.
This isn't going to be pretty. Chances are this game will be a defensive struggle throughout, as neither team has shown the ability to score with any degree of consistency. The Bulldogs have the game's best playmaker in Caldwell-Pope, as well as the homecourt advantage, but that may not be enough.
Sports Network Predicted Outcome: LSU 73, Georgia 67
