GAME NOTES: In Atlantic-10 Conference action at the A.J. Palumbo Center, the Duquesne Dukes will host the Charlotte 49ers on Wednesday night.
Charlotte most recently suffered a 104-83 loss at St. Bonaventure. It was the fourth consecutive loss for the 49ers, who have won one game in their last seven tries. After this matchup Charlotte will head home to host Saint Joseph's to close out the regular season. Next season the 49ers will move out of the Atlantic 10 and move into Conference-USA.
The Dukes are coming off a harsh 97-64 loss at La Salle. It was the fourth consecutive loss for Duquesne which as earned just a single win in its past 16 outings. This is a brief stay at home for the Dukes before heading to Richmond to face the Spiders in the regular-season finale.
The all-time series between these squads is tied at 5-5 and this will be the final meeting for the squads in A-10 action.
E. Victor Nickerson led the 49ers with 18 points and nine rebounds in the loss to St. Bonnies. Terrence Williams added 17 points, Ivan Benkovich managed 15, and Chris Braswell had 10 Pierra Henry contributed 12 points, seven rebounds, and six assists for Charlotte before fouling out. They allowed the Bonnies to shoot nearly 60.0 percent from the field and go 11-of-18 from beyond the arc.
Braswell is the team's only player averaging in double figures that has played in over 18 games. He manages 11.0 ppg, shooting nearly 45.0 percent from field. Clayton is the teams top rebounder and grabs 6.4 rpg, while being the only 49er earning 6.0+ rpg.
In the win over the Explorers, Derrick Colter and Quevyn Winters were the only Dukes to score in double figures as Colter tallied 16 points and five assists and Winters added 13 points. They allowed La Salle to shoot over 50.0 percent from the field and knock down 10 3-pointers.
Colter and Sean Johnson are the only two players on Duquesne that constantly score in double figures. Colter manages 13.1 ppg and Johnson contributes 11.3. While they are the Dukes' leading scorers, neither play shoots above 37.0 percent from the field. Winters adds 9.4 ppg and shoots above 40.0 percent from the floor. Duquesne struggles defensively, allowing 75.0 ppg on nearly 45.0 percent shooting from the field.
While both teams are struggling, Charlotte has proved to be a better team over the season and the Dukes have failed to take advantage of homecourt opportunities. The 49ers should look for this matchup to be their chance to break out of their slump as the regular season winds down.
