Gulbis storms past Garcia-Lopez to take St. Pete crown
St. Petersburg, Russia (Sports Network) - Ernests Gulbis won the last 11 games of Sunday's final against Guillermo Garcia-Lopez to capture the title at the St. Petersburg Open.
The sixth-seeded Gulbis rallied for a 3-6, 6-4, 6-0 victory on Sunday for his second title of the year and the fourth of his career. He previously won the Delray Beach crown back in February and Sunday's triumph gave the Latvian a 4-0 lifetime record in ATP finals.
"I feel great, it's my second title of the season and the fourth one of the my career," said Gulbis. "I've been very consistent especially in finals; I've never lost in a final. I'm proud of that record."
Gulbis was down 3-6, 1-4 when he completely turned it around. After winning the final five games of the second set, he dominated the third by claiming all but five of the 29 points played in the set.
Garcia-Lopez fell to 2-3 all-time in title matches, including a pair of losses this year. The Spaniard also fell to Lukas Rosol in the Bucharest title match back in April and hasn't won a tournament since 2010 in Bangkok.
"Despite losing today I played some unbelievable tennis all week, so I have to be happy overall with the week," said Garcia-Lopez. "Congratulations to Ernests, he deserved the title today."
Gulbis, who improved to 2-1 lifetime against Garcia-Lopez, earned a first prize of $78,000.
