Djokovic rolls in Dubai opener
Dubai, United Arab Emirates (Sports Network) - World No. 1 and three-time champion Novak Djokovic highlighted Tuesday's opening-round winners at the $1.785 Dubai Tennis Championships.
Playing his first match in four weeks, the Australian Open champ extended his unbeaten streak to 14 matches with a 6-1 6-4 victory over fellow Serb Viktor Troicki on the hardcourts at Dubai Tennis Stadium.
Djokovic, who captured this Dubai event three straight years from 2009-11, will face Spaniard Roberto Bautista Agut on Wednesday.
An upset came when capable left-hander Michael Llodra took out his fifth- seeded fellow Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, 7-6 (7-3), 6-2, in 79 minutes. Llodra broke Tsonga three times, while Tsonga could manage only one break of Llodra en route to defeat.
The former Aussie Open runner-up Tsonga was fresh off his title in Marseille last week.
In other action involving seeds, No. 3 Tomas Berdych blew past American wild card Rajeev Ram 6-1, 6-3, No. 4 Juan Martin del Potro saved three match points before outlasting former Aussie Open runner-up Marcos Baghdatis 4-6, 6-4, 7-6 (7-4), and former world No. 3 Nikolay Davydenko doused sixth-seeded Serb Janko Tipsarevic 6-0, 7-5. Berdych was last week's Marseille runner-up to Tsonga.
Up next for Berdych will be German Tobias Kamke, while the former U.S. Open and recent Rotterdam champion del Potro will take on Indian Somdev Devvarman.
Additional wins came for Romanian Victor Hanescu, Spaniard Marcel Granollers, Russian wild card Dmitry Tursunov, and Kamke. Granollers should have his hands full with five-time Dubai titlist Roger Federer on Day 3.
