NFL Game Summary - Jacksonville at Buffalo
(Sunday, October 10th)
Final Score: Jacksonville 36, Buffalo 26
Orchard Park, NY (Sports Network) - David Garrard passed for 178 yards and three touchdowns and Josh Scobee kicked five field goals, leading the Jacksonville Jaguars to a 36-26 victory over the winless Buffalo Bills.
Garrard completed 16-of-20 passes and was intercepted once, and threw two of his touchdown passes to Marcedes Lewis. Maurice Jones-Drew ran for 84 yards in the win, the second in a row for the Jaguars (3-2), who beat Indianapolis last week thanks to a 59-yard field goal by Scobee.
"It was important that we come on the road and follow up that big win at home last week with a win today," said Jaguars head coach Jack Del Rio.
Ryan Fitzpatrick threw for 220 yards and three touchdowns for the Bills (0-5), who hadn't started a season with five consecutive losses since 1985.
"We're going to build off of what we did early, we did some good things," Fitzpatrick said. "The loss, obviously, is what's on everybody's mind right now. We're tired of losing."
Jacksonville got the win thanks to a strong second half, which it began with a scoring drive. The Jaguars were set up at the Buffalo 39-yard line after a 51- yard kickoff return from Deji Karim.
Three plays later, Garrard aired out a pass for Lewis, who made the catch near the five and got into the end zone.
The 27-yard touchdown pass had the Jaguars ahead 20-13, but Garrard fumbled on the Jaguars' next drive to allow the Bills to tie the game. Donte Whitner recovered at the Jacksonville 45, and Buffalo scored in six plays, though it was not a clean drive.
Fitzpatrick fumbled on an aborted backward pass before wide receiver Roscoe Parrish recovered the ball and ran to the 10. A personal foul on Jacksonville moved the ball to the five, and on third-and-goal Fitzpatrick connected with Steve Johnson for a touchdown. The receiver halted his forward motion in the right front corner of the end zone, and twisted to make the catch with 6:56 left in the quarter.
Garrard's 22-yard completion to Mike Sims-Walker on the next drive had the Jaguars at the Buffalo six and threatening to score. Jones-Drew plowed into the end zone on the play, though partially because Lewis was holding a defender.
The penalty pushed Jacksonville back to the 16, but advanced to the seven for a third-down play. Garrard then found Sims-Walker open in the middle of the end zone, as Sims-Walker shook the coverage of linebacker Paul Posluszny to easily make the catch.
After a Bills punt, Scobee kicked a 34-yarder for a 30-20 lead with 11:44 left in the contest.
Buffalo faced a 4th-and-7 on its next drive and, needing points, went for a fake punt. But Montell Owens got around his blocker to chase down punter Brian Moorman from behind, well short of the first down.
That led to a 40-yarder from Scobee, who drilled a 46-yard try with 2:40 left to push Jacksonville's lead to 36-20. Johnson had a seven-yard TD reception in the remaining time, but it was too big a deficit for the Bills to overcome.
Buffalo raced out to an early lead thanks to a handful of Jaguars mistakes, the first of which was a fumble by punt returner Mike Thomas following the game's opening drive. The Bills immediately took advantage, as Fitzpatrick tossed a strike to Lee Evans along the left sideline, and Evans got across the goal line to complete the 45-yard play.
Andra Davis picked off Garrard on the Jaguars' next drive, and the turnover led to a 29-yard field goal by Rian Lindell.
But the Jaguars got back on track, cracking the scoreboard with a Scobee 49- yarder on their next drive. Buffalo countered with a 15-play, 70-yard march that lasted nearly nine minutes, but resulted only in a 22-yard kick from Lindell a few minutes into the second quarter.
Scobee's 49-yard field goal with 5:52 left had Jacksonville within 13-6, and the visitors tied the game following a Bills punt.
Just before the two-minute warning, Thomas took an end-around 33 yards to the Buffalo 15, and a short run by Jones-Drew later during the drive gave his team a 1st-and-goal from the four. Garrard's short pass to Jones-Drew advanced the ball to the one before the quarterback found Lewis in the end zone with 25 seconds remaining.
Garrard's 178 passing yards give him 14,058 for his career...Karim added 70 rushing yards for the Jaguars...Fred Jackson led the Bills with 73 rushing yards. Evans ended with five catches for 87 yards...The all-time series between the teams is tied, 5-5.
