CFL Game Summary - Calgary at British Columbia

(Saturday, October 8th)

Final Score: British Columbia 33, Calgary 31

Vancouver, BC (Sports Network) - Not only did Paul McCallum put his name in the history books Saturday night, but the British Columbia kicker made a game- winning 53-yard field goal as time expired to give the Lions a 33-31 victory over Calgary.

McCallum made his first three field goals of the night to set the CFL record for consecutive made field goals at 30. That streak came to an end with 4 1/2 minutes left in the fourth, but McCallum redeemed himself with a 53-yarder to give the Lions their seventh straight victory.

Travis Lulay completed 18-of-31 passes for 245 yards and two touchdowns for British Columbia (8-6).

Arland Bruce caught six passes for 92 yards and a score. Tim Brown carried the ball six times for 54 yards.

Henry Burris connected on 15-of-19 passes for 193 yards and a touchdown for Calgary (8-6). Burris also carried the ball five times for 31 yards.

Jon Cornish carried the ball nine times for 49 yards and a score. Landan Talley had two catches for 94 yards and a touchdown.

Holding a 30-25 advantage, the Lions sent McCallum out for a chance at 31 straight made field goals. But McCallum's streak ended as the ball sailed wide left. Larry Taylor caught the ball and sprinted 122 yards the other way to give Calgary a 31-30 lead with 4 1/2 minutes to play.

British Columbia took over at its own 49 with just 36 seconds to play. Following two incomplete passes, Lulay ran around before throwing a 17-yard pass to Bruce. Following a negative rushing play, McCallum lifted the Lions to victory with his 53-yarder.

British Columbia and Calgary are now tied atop the Western Division standings.

Burris fumbled the football on the first play of the game. British Columbia capitalized just three plays later, as Lulay threw a 20-yard TD pass to Bruce.

Geroy Simon added a 13-yard TD catch to make it a 14-0 game. Calgary, though, got a one-yard rushing touchdown from Drew Tate to make it a seven-point game.

Rene Paredes missed a field goal early in the second quarter, and Brown tried to return the ball for British Columbia. Brown fumbled the ball and Calgary recovered the loose ball inside the 10-yard line. Two plays later, Cornish tied the game with a five-yard score.

The Lions reclaimed their seven-point lead on Andrew Harris' six-yard TD run.

Paredes made a 36-yard field goal with less than two minutes remaining in the half to cut the gap to four.

McCallum started his historic night at the end of the half, making a 47- yard field goal to give the Lions a 24-17 lead. His field goal tied Dave Ridgway's CFL record of 28 consecutive made field goals.

Talley's 81-yard TD catch and a single gave the Stampeders a 25-24 edge.

McCallum made CFL history with his 46-yarder late in the third quarter. He added a 20-yard field goal early in the fourth to make it 30 straight made field goals.
