Blue Bombers name O'Shea head coach

Winnipeg, MB ( - The Winnipeg Blue Bombers named Mike O'Shea head coach on Wednesday.

O'Shea joins the Blue Bombers after completing his fourth season as an assistant coach with Toronto. A three-time Grey Cup champion with the Argonauts as a player, he captured a fourth while coaching the club's special teams unit in 2012.

"Mike knows what it takes to win in this league, and he has done that as both a player and as a coach," Winnipeg general manager Kyle Walters said in a statement. "He is highly respected by his peers, and someone we feel is the right fit for what we are trying to build here. We're thrilled to have coach O'Shea on board."

O'Shea takes over a team that finished the 2013 season with a league-worst 3-15 record.

"The organization, our fans, the city and province deserve a winner, and I assure you we will do everything in our power to make all of those people proud," O'Shea said in a statement.

The winner of the Most Outstanding Canadian Award in 1999, O'Shea concluded his 16-season CFL career second all-time in tackles with 1,151.
