Seattle, WA (SportsNetwork.com) - Robbie Keane's goal 12 minutes from time
rescued a point for the Los Angeles Galaxy in a tense 1-1 draw with Seattle
Sounders FC on Sunday at CenturyLink Field.
Seattle entered the season finale riding a franchise-worst four-match losing
streak and hoping to round into form heading into the postseason. The hosts
had the better of the play early on and grabbed the lead on the half-hour
Hometown fan-favorite Lamar Neagle set the scoring play in motion as he sent a
well-struck cross into the penalty area which allowed U.S. international Clint
Dempsey to run onto at the far post and tap it home for an easy finish and his
first goal in a Sounders kit.
Los Angeles had a golden opportunity to draw level three minutes before the
break when defender Omar Gonzalez got a head on a cross from Landon Donovan
and the ball appeared to cross the goal line, but it wasn't given and the
Sounders went into the break with the one-goal margin.
But Los Angeles kept coming and found its equalizer in the 78th minute when
Hector Jimenez headed a ball down to Keane, who smashed it past Seattle
goalkeeper Michael Gspurning on the half-volley.
The goal gave Los Angeles a boost and they went in search of a winner, but it
never materialized and the clubs were forced to settle for a point apiece.
The Galaxy end the regular season in third place in the Western conference
with the result and Colorado's loss to Vancouver on Sunday. They will face
Real Salt Lake in the West semifinals.
Seattle, meanwhile, ends the year on a seven-game winless run and finishes
fourth in the West. They will host Colorado in the knockout round.
