Final Score: Seattle 2, Real Salt Lake 0
Seattle, WA (Sports Network) - Obafemi Martins and Lamar Neagle scored first-
half goals on Friday as Seattle Sounders FC handed Real Salt Lake a 2-0 defeat
at CenturyLink Field, propelling the club to the top of the overall standings
in the process.
Seattle came into the match in scorching-hot form having won seven of their
last eight league matches and started Friday's contest just as hot as the hosts
took the lead just three minutes into the game.
Defender Andy Rose made the scoring play happen with excellent hustle to track
down a ball along the end line. He whipped a low cross into the box for a
completely unmarked Martins to smash home on the volley, sending the 55,107
fans into euphoria.
Real Salt Lake's best chance of the opening half came in the 31st minute when
Joao Plata ran at the Seattle backline and ripped a right-footed strike from
just outside the area, but it skidded wide of the left post.
The Sounders doubled their lead in the 38th minute when defender DeAndre Yedlin
came charging down the right flank and sent a low cross into the area. Neagle
was there to rip it home for his third goal in as many games.
RSL continued to look for ways to break down the Sounders back four, but the
final ball was lacking all night as the Sounders claimed their sixth
consecutive home win.
The result lifts Seattle to 49 points, one ahead of RSL atop the Western
Conference. The Sounders also extended an incredible 46-match unbeaten streak
when they score first.
