Portland, OR (Sports Network) - The Portland Timbers scored for the first time
in three weeks Sunday, but they wasted an opportunity for three points against
FC Dallas in MLS.
Jack Jewsbury scored off a full volley from the top of the box with 11 minutes
remaining as Portland escaped with a 1-1 draw at Jeld-Wen Field against 10-man
Dallas to end a five-game losing streak.
Scott Sealy scored five minutes after halftime for Dallas, which had Zach Loyd
sent off just over a minute after it scored.
Dallas (5-11-8) held on for a point - just its third result away from home all
year. Portland (5-12-5) has dropped points at home in seven of 12 matches this
With just one win in its last 11 road matches, Dallas presented an opportunity
for Portland pick up three huge points at home. But after a scoreless half, FC
Dallas started the scoring when Brek Shea, back from a two-game hiatus, slid a
perfect pass in from the left for Sealy to tuck inside the right post.
Loyd earned his marching orders soon after for a second yellow card and Dallas
eventually surrendered its surprise lead. Dallas goalkeeper Kevin Hartman, who
made a strong save on Danny Mwanga minutes earlier, cleared a ball to the edge
of the area that found Jewsbury.
The Portland captain lined up a shot and drove a volley right back at Hartman,
who could not recover in time to make the save, as Jewsbury notched his second
goal this season.
FC Dallas maintained its three-point edge on Portland for eighth place in the
nine-team Western Conference.
Portland will try to take some momentum from the draw, and earn its first win
away from home, Aug. 15 at Toronto FC in its next league match. Dallas is back
in action Saturday, when it hosts the Colorado Rapids.
