Final Score: Portland 1, Real Salt Lake 1

Sandy, UT (Sports Network) - A late goal from Mamadou Danso earned a dramatic point for the Portland Timbers in a 1-1 draw with Real Salt Lake at Rio Tinto Stadium on Saturday.

While Portland was knocked out of playoff contention by a midweek Red Bull New York win, Real Salt Lake was looking to secure third place in the Western Conference to effectively avoid a wild card game.

But with Real Salt Lake dropping two points, the door was left wide open for FC Dallas, which could snag the number three spot in the West with a win over the San Jose Earthquakes.

Alvaro Saborio helped Real Salt Lake jump out in front with a goal in the 45th minute, but Danso pulled back an equalizer in second-half stoppage time to end Portland's season in entertaining fashion and add some additional drama surrounding FC Dallas' clash against San Jose.

Real Salt Lake opened the scoring just before halftime, as a ball played over the top was met by Saborio who lofted a shot past an on-rushing Troy Perkins and into the back of the net, notching his 11th goal this term.

Portland had a golden opportunity to draw level in the 56th minute when the Timbers were awarded a penalty kick after a hand ball in the box from Real Salt Lake defender Chris Wingert. Jack Jewsbury took the ensuing spot kick, but rattled the crossbar with a powerful shot.

The equalizer eventually came, as Danso converted a close range shot in stoppage time to earn Portland a share of the points.

Both teams end their respective regular seasons with two successive draws, as Portland finishes with a record of 11-14-9 (42 points) and Real Salt Lake heads to the postseason behind its 15-11-8 record (53 points).
