Final Score: Seattle 2, San Jose 1
Seattle, WA (Sports Network) - Seattle Sounders FC scored twice in the final
eight minutes to earn a dramatic 2-1 home victory over the San Jose
Earthquakes on Saturday.
With the Sounders already heading to the postseason, it was a festive
atmosphere at CenturyLink Field. Over 64,000 attended the match to celebrate
Kasey Keller's final regular season home game, which the Sounders were able to
commemorate with a last-gasp win.
Chris Wondolowski put San Jose in front midway through the opening half, but
Seattle eventually overturned the deficit. Sammy Ochoa tallied the equalizer
in the 82nd minute while Fredy Montero scored the winner five minutes later.
Wondolowski opened the scoring in the 24th minute, taking a through ball from
Rafael Baca and slotting a shot underneath Keller for his 15th goal of the
season. Th Earthquakes striker is keeping pace with Dwayne De Rosario for the
league scoring lead while looking to become the first player in Major League
Soccer history to claim back-to-back Golden Boot titles.
Seattle continued to press in search of a goal, which came late in the match
from an unlikely source. Ochoa notched his first goal of the season, slipping
a shot past Jon Busch that struck the post and trickled over the goal line.
Montero went on to score the game-winner in the 87th minute, receiving a
penetrating pass in the box and quickly poking a shot past Busch for his 12th
goal of the campaign.
Seattle has won four of its last five matches and heads into its next regular
season clash on Oct. 22 against Chivas USA with a stranglehold on second place
in the Western Conference.
San Jose has endured a disappointing term in 2011, having been eliminated from
playoff contention for some time. The 'Quakes sit in eighth place in the West
with 35 points and will wrap up their season next Saturday when they host FC
Dallas at Buck Shaw Stadium.
