Kansas City, KS (Sports Network) - For the second successive match, Real Salt
Lake was undone by a poor start as the club slumped to a 2-0 defeat against
Sporting Kansas City at Livestrong Sporting Park on Wednesday.
In its 2-0 defeat to the Columbus Crew this past weekend, RSL coach Jason
Kreis watched his team give two goals away in the opening 10 minutes on their
way to a defeat.
But not much changed on Wednesday as Sporting took the game to the visitors
and scored two goals in a five-minute span midway through the opening half as
Roger Espinoza and Teal Bunbury found the back of the net.
Espinoza's night ended early when he was sent off in the 57th minute, but the
hosts were able to see out the match with 10 men and have now extended their
unbeaten streak to 14 games, while Salt Lake has lost its last two matches.
Espinoza was a constant threat in the first half, and after his flicked header
was kept out by RSL goalkeeper Nick Rimando, he blasted a shot just past the
upper-left corner of the net from outside the area.
The scoring was opened in the 29th minute when Espinoza split two defenders to
get into the area before beating Rimando with a shot at his near post.
Rimando did well to keep out a close-range header from Kei Kamara five minutes
later, but Bunbury was on hand to fire home the rebound, doubling the K.C.
The second half started better for Salt Lake with Espinoza seeing red for a
poor challenge on Kyle Beckerman in the 57th minute.
However, it was the home side that nearly scored 10 minutes later when
Jeferson squandered a great chance to open his account for Sporting by missing
the net from six yards after a good cross from Omar Bravo.
RSL finally started to create some offense in the final 20 minutes, but Alvaro
Saborio's header was cleared off the goal line by Seth Sinovic.
Sporting goalkeeper Jimmy Nielsen had a pretty quiet evening until the end of
the game when he needed to make a few saves, including a fine stop on a
Beckerman free kick that found its way through traffic before being parried to
