Portland, OR (Sports Network) - The Portland Timbers were just seconds away
from getting back into the win column at Jeld-Wen Field on Sunday.
Portland had won its first five games at home to start the season, but after
two straight defeats on home soil, a comeback win against Red Bull New York
would be a nice result.
However, things didn't go according to plan as a right-wing cross from New
York's Dwayne De Rosario in the fifth minute of added time struck the arm of
Portland's Rodney Wallace inside the penalty area.
De Rosario then fired home the subsequent spot kick on the final play of the
match, helping his team rally for a 3-3 draw.
The visitors looked well on their way to three points just five minutes into
the game when De Rosario set up the first goal in the MLS career of Austin Da
The Timbers struggled offensively in the first 45 minutes, but they came to
life in the opening minutes of the second half and stormed into the lead.
Jack Jewsbury leveled things at 1-1 in the 48th minute when he picked up a
headed clearance at the edge of the penalty area and slotted his shot inside
the left post.
Substitute Kevin Goldthwaite made it 2-1 to the Timbers one minute later with
a neat redirection off of his heel at close range, but Portland wasn't done.
Jorge Perlaza's low cross in the 67th was inadvertently knocked into his own
net by New York's Stephen Keel, capping a run of three goals in 20 minutes for
Thierry Henry scored his eighth goal of the season in the 73rd to make it a
one-goal game for New York, but the Timbers had a golden chance to extend the
lead from the penalty spot, only for Jewsbury to put his shot off the right
An incident away from the ball in stoppage time saw Henry earn himself a red
card, but it didn't keep the Red Bulls from stealing a point as De Rosario's
final cross and then successful penalty kick helped New York remain unbeaten
in its last six games.
