Washington, D.C. (Sports Network) - Steven Lenhart stepped up for the second
game in a row without San Jose's usual goal-scoring hero Chris Wondolowski on
international duty, scoring three goals while adding an assist to lead the
Earthquakes to a 4-2 win at D.C. United on Saturday.
Andy Najar actually opened the scoring for the home side on Andy Najar bobble
head night when he converted a perfect feed from Josh Wolff in the 13th
But just two minutes later Lenhart scored the first of his three goals when he
got behind the defense on a Khari Stephenson though-ball, cut around D.C.
goalkeeper Bill Hamid and fired home. He got behind because he beat the United
offside trap on the play.
Just seven minutes later Lenhart gave his team a 2-1 lead when he laid a ball
off to Stephenson at the top of the area. Stephenson fired on goal, and
although Hamid made the save, Lenhart was there to knock home the rebound.
D.C. United rookie Blake Brettschneider scored his first MLS goal in the 34th
minute when he took a Chris Korb ball at the top of the area with his back to
goal, took a touch inside and turned and fired just inside the near post to
make it 2-2.
San Jose went up 3-2 four minutes after the break when Simon Dawkins took a
feed from Lenhart in the middle of the area and blasted into the bottom left
corner for his fourth goal of the season.
Lenhart completed the hat trick when he headed a ball over an onrushing Hamid,
who missed punching the ball away and was caught out of position at the hour
