Frisco, TX (Sports Network) - Jeff Cunningham scored his 132nd career goal to
tie the Major League Soccer record, and FC Dallas extended its unbeaten streak
to 18 games and clinched a postseason spot with a 3-0 victory over the Chicago
Fire on Saturday night at Pizza Hut Park.
Cunningham scored his 11th goal of the season on a penalty in the second half,
tying D.C. United's Jaime Moreno for the all-time lead. FC Dallas also equaled
the MLS record unbeaten streak of 18 games in a season, and climbed within one
of the all-time record of 19 also held by the Columbus Crew.
Milton Rodriguez and Marvin Chavez also scored for FC Dallas (12-2-13), which
qualified for the postseason for the first time since 2007.
Chicago (7-11-8) snapped a seven-game winless run Wednesday with a 3-0 victory
over the San Jose Earthquakes, but were no match for surging Dallas. The Fire
are still mathematically alive in the playoff race, but have to win their last
four matches to have any chance of qualifying.
Rodriguez put Dallas in control in the 19th minute when he ran onto an outlet
from goalie Dario Sala, avoided Chicago defender Kwame Watson-Siriboe, and hit
the upper-left corner to beat Fire goalie Sean Johnson. It was the fourth goal
of the season for Rodriguez.
Chavez sealed the victory just seconds after halftime, as he took a pass from
play-maker David Ferreira, made a cut to open space against Chicago's Steven
Kinney, then got a lucky deflection off the Fire defender to sneak a shot past
Johnson. It was the second goal of the year for Chavez.
Cunningham added the third goal in the 67th minute, finishing into the bottom-
left corner past a diving Johnson. Cunningham could overtake Moreno, who will
retire at the end of the season but barely plays for United, by the end of the
Chicago had a chance to avoid the shutout, but Calen Carr's perfect cross from
the right to Brian McBride was amazingly directed off target by the ex-United
Chicago hosts the Columbus Crew on Friday in its next game and FC Dallas hosts
the Colorado Rapids on Oct. 9.
