Final Score: San Jose 0, Columbus 0

Columbus, OH (Sports Network) - William Hesmer made three saves for his 11th shutout and the Columbus Crew tied the San Jose Earthquakes, 0-0, on Saturday night in Major League Soccer at Crew Stadium.

Columbus lost the top spot in the Eastern Conference to Red Bull New York, who defeated the Kansas City Wizards 1-0, but both Columbus and New York clinched postseason spots with the results.

The Crew (13-7-7) entered the weekend with a one-point lead over New York, but fell one point behind the Red Bulls with three games remaining in the regular season for both clubs.

San Jose (11-8-7) also benefited from Kansas City's defeat to New York, as it opened a seven-point lead over the Wizards for the last playoff spot. San Jose and Kansas City both have four games remaining.

"Tonight was a good road performance by the team and I think that a draw was a fair result," San Jose coach Frank Yallop said.

The Earthquakes' best scoring opportunity came in the 70th minute when leading scorer Chris Wondolowski directed a cross from Ryan Johnson toward the upper- left corner, only to have Hesmer lunge to push the ball just over the bar.

San Jose goalie Jon Busch, who finished with four saves for his fifth shutout, responded with his biggest save of the match in the 75th on Chad Marshall. The Crew's Guillermo Barros Schelotto set up the scoring chance with a corner from the left that Marshall headed at the far post. Busch got his fingertips on the ball to push it over the bar.

"Jon has been playing outstanding for us. I remember two his saves that were just unbelievable," Yallop said.

Robbie Rogers came off the bench to set up Columbus' last chance, but his pass from the left side to far post was headed wide by Emilio Renteria in stoppage time.

Columbus visits the Chicago Fire on Friday night in its next game and San Jose visits D.C. United on Oct. 9.
