Harrison, NJ (Sports Network) - Red Bull New York suffered it's third straight
Major League Soccer loss, and second straight at home, falling to the
Columbus Crew 3-1 at Red Bulls Arena on Thursday night.
With the win, the Crew (5-0-2) jump over New York and into first in the
Eastern Conference table with 17 points after just seven matches.
Crew midfielder Eddie Gaven had a goal and an assist in the first half to lead
his team to victory.
Gaven actually scored the game's first goal in the 35th minute when he skied
to head home a Frankie Hejduk cross past goalkeeper Bouna Coundoul.
Just over three minutes later the Crew doubled their lead on a Gaven corner
kick that was headed home by Andy Iro at the back post.
New York (5-4-0), which had hit the post three times earlier in the game,
finally pulled a goal back in the 81st minute when Tony Tchani headed a ball
past Crew goalkeeper Will Hesmer, but less than two minutes later the Crew
Emilio Renteria went in on a breakaway after central defenders Mike Petke and
Tim Ream collided, walked past Coundoul and fired into the open net to close
out the scoring.
New York will aim to break it current losing streak when it travels to New
England on May 29, while the Crew play at Kansas City on Sunday in their next
