Final Score: D.C. United 3, Chivas USA 2
Washington, D.C. (Sports Network) - Carey Talley converted a penalty kick in
the 92nd minute against Chivas USA defender Dario Delgado following goalkeeper
Zach Thornton's ejection, and D.C. United won 3-2 at RFK Stadium on Saturday.
Thornton was ejected for denying a goal-scoring opportunity for D.C.'s Santino
Quaranta and, because Chivas already used all three substitutes, Delgado moved
into goal to face the penalty kick.
Talley drove the attempt to the left and easily scored with Delgado - who wore
Thornton's jersey - guessing wrong and diving the opposite direction.
United (2-0-8) won for just the second time this year, and ended a three-match
losing streak. D.C. lost eight of its first nine games this season, and didn't
score in seven of those losses.
Chivas USA (3-7-1), which was playing for the sixth time this month, lost its
fourth straight game.
United, which had led in just one match this season, was denied on two chances
inside two minutes. Danny Allsopp directed a cross from Andy Najar toward the
right from six yards that Thornton saved. Talley was denied by Thornton at the
left post off the ensuing corner.
Less than 15 minutes later, D.C. found itself trailing again when Justin Braun
drove into the area and finished at the near post for his fourth of the year.
Michael Lahoud set up Braun on the right side, and he drove around Talley then
slotted past Bill Hamid and just inside the post from the edge of the six-yard
box on the right side.
Quaranta tested Thornton directly off a free kick from 20 yards in the 22nd,
but the veteran deflected the shot wide for a corner. Jordan Graye had a shot
off the corner from Quaranta but Thornton dove to make his fourth save.
D.C. erased the deficit four minutes later on Najar's first goal of the year.
Rodney Wallace played the ball from the left to right side of the area, where
Najar met the cross and headed inside the far post from seven yards.
D.C. was gifted a chance to take the lead early in the second half but, after
Mariano Trujillo's clearance deflected to Allsopp at the top of the area, the
United forward drilled the right post.
Allsopp was denied again on another chance in the 59th, as Thornton saved his
shot at the right post for his fifth stop. Quaranta followed with another look
at goal in the 74th, but Thornton made another save.
United substitute Adam Cristman solved Thornton in the 76th when he tapped-in
his first goal of the year. Clyde Simms set up the goal with a cross from the
right that Delgado directed away from Thornton and off the left post. The ball
fell to Cristman, who just had to knock the ball in from a few steps out.
Chivas responded in the 80th when Maykel Galindo broke into the area and slid
a shot through Hamid's legs at the near post, setting up the exciting finish.
Quaranta tried to direct a ball past Thornton from 12 yards out but the diving
goalie tripped the United striker with his outstretched arms, and was shown a
red card for a foul in the box to set up Talley's goal and spoil his outing.
D.C. will try to build on the win when it hosts Real Salt Lake on June 5, when
Chivas will try to rebound against Red Bull New York.
