Columbus, OH (Sports Network) - Guillermo Barros Schelotto had a goal and an
assist, leading the Columbus Crew to a 2-0 win over Toronto FC on Saturday at
Crew Stadium in the MLS season opener for both clubs.
Schelotto set up Andy Iro's 29th-minute goal, then added the clinching goal in
the 87th. Columbus extended its undefeated streak in season openers to six and
spoiled Preki's debut as Toronto FC coach.
Columbus grabbed the lead with just over 15 minutes left in the first half off
a free kick from Schelotto. He drove the ball in from the right and Iro headed
inside the left post from seven yards. Iro started for Chad Marshall, who sat
out with an injury.
Martin Saric, who just signed Friday, had Toronto's best chance in the opening
half but his left-footed shot from 20 yards was saved by Crew goalie William
Toronto was without injured striker Chad Barrett, and failed to solve Columbus
before Schelotto put the match away in the closing minutes.
Columbus defender Danny O'Rourke and Toronto goalie Stefan Frei collided, and
the ball popped loose. Toronto defender Nick Garcia attempted to clear but the
ball found Schelotto, who had an easy finish for his first goal of the year.
Schelotto, the 2008 MLS MVP, led Columbus with 12 goals last season.
Both clubs are off next week, but resume play April 10 when Columbus visits FC
Dallas and Toronto FC visits the New England Revolution.
