Final Score: Toronto FC 1, Real Salt Lake 0

Toronto, ON (Sports Network) - Jim Brennan scored and Brian Edwards posted his first shutout of the season, helping Toronto FC edge Real Salt Lake 1-0 at BMO Field on Saturday to remain in contention for its first-ever playoff berth.

Toronto (10-10-9) held on after Brennan scored his second of the season in the 48th, a rare feat for a team that has allowed an MLS-high 15 goals in the last 15 minutes of games this season.

Real, which leads MLS with 17 goals after the 75th minute, also stayed in the postseason hunt, but both teams will likely need help to secure a berth.

Toronto controlled the first half, and Amado Guevara had the two best scoring chances. Guevara drilled a close-range effort off Real's Kyle Beckerman, and later drilled the crossbar off a 22-yard free kick.

Brennan rewarded Toronto for its first-half performance just minutes into the second half, latching onto a rebound to slot into the lower right in the 48th.

Real's Robbie Findley nearly drew his side level in the 72nd with a low drive toward the left post, but Edwards made his best save of the match with a one- handed stop.

Edwards had two shutouts in his rookie season last year, but Stefan Frei moved into the starting roll this season for TFC before being sidelined by injury. Edwards has started the last two games for Toronto.

Toronto visits Red Bull New York and Real hosts Colorado when both clubs wrap up the regular season on Oct. 24.
