Final Score: Dallas 2, San Jose 1

Santa Clara, CA (Sports Network) - FC Dallas won its third straight Major League Soccer fixture, and fourth in its last five games, 2-1, at the San Jose Earthquakes on Wednesday night.

Jeff Cunningham scored his league-leading 17th goal of the season in the 81st minute to propel his team to victory and keep its playoff hopes alive.

The game-winning play was started by David Ferreira, who played a through-ball into the middle of the Earthquakes' penalty area to a charging Dax McCarty. McCarty then went in on goalkeeper Joe Cannon alone before squaring a pass to Cunningham for the easy tap-in goal.

With the loss, San Jose (7-13-7) is now mathematically eliminated from playoff contention, although given that the club has been in last place in the Western table most of the season, that was a foregone conclusion.

Dallas (10-12-6) on the other hand, has been on a run as of late, spearheaded by the scoring surge of Cunningham, who was recently named the MLS Player of the Month.

Cunningham's strike partner, Ferreira, opened the scoring in the game less than five minutes after the break when Heath Pearce played a ball into the San Jose area to Cunningham. The ball deflected off Cunningham's boot as he took an errant touch, but went right to Ferreira, who was streaking behind the defense. Ferreira then slotted his eighth goal of the season past San Jose goalkeeper Joe Cannon for the 1-0 advantage.

San Jose equalized in the 73rd minute when Quincy Amarikwa ran onto a ball played to him by Shea Salinas in the Dallas penalty area and took a touch before chipping a shot over a charging Dario Sala for his first goal of the season.

But Cunningham's 17th proved to be the difference.

Dallas will aim to continue its late playoff push when it hosts Colorado on Oct. 17 in its next MLS fixture, while San Jose travels to Toronto on Saturday.
