Washington, D.C. (Sports Network) - D.C. United began its busy week of Major League Soccer action with a 1-0 win over the visiting Kansas City Wizards at RFK Stadium on Wednesday night.

Luciano Emilio scored the game's only goal about five minutes before the break to propel United (8-5-12) to third in the Eastern Conference table, solidifying its playoff chances with just five games remaining in the regular season.

The win was also the D.C. club's second in its last three league fixtures and extended a four game unbeaten run.

Kansas City (6-11-6), on the other hand, dropped further out of the playoff field, and sits second from the bottom in the East. The team has now lost five of its last six league fixtures while recording just one win in its last nine.

Wednesday's only goal was scored in the 39th minute after D.C. rookie Chris Pontius headed a short corner off the left post from close range. Emilio swooped in and fired home the rebound for his ninth goal of the season. Emilio now has four goals in seven career games vs. the Wizards.

Kansas City, which outshot D.C. 16-12, had a great chance to equalize just before the break when a Claudio Lopez service found a wide-open Davy Arnaud at the top of the six-yard box, but his header went wide right.

Arnaud had his team's best second-half chance as well, collecting a loose ball in the middle of the D.C. penalty area, but his shot went wide left as his extended goal scoring slump continued.

Both teams are back in action on Saturday night, with Kansas City traveling to New York and D.C. hosting Seattle in MLS fixtures.
