Frisco, TX (Sports Network) - Jeff Cunningham followed up his four-goal outing
with the match-winning goal against the Houston Dynamo on Thursday, leading FC
Dallas to a 1-0 win at Pizza Hut Park.
Cunningham scored four goals in a 6-0 victory over the Kansas City Wizards on
Saturday, and added his fifth in his last two matches in the 20th minute to up
his career total to 113 - which ranks third all-time in MLS.
FC Dallas (6-9-5) won back-to-back games for the first time all year and moved
level with Real Salt Lake for sixth in the Western Conference.
Houston (10-6-5) has the best record in MLS, but has just one win in its last
five matches and two in its last eight.
Dallas was impressive early, as Cunningham nearly scored on the first scoring
chance of the match and Brek Shea drilled the crossbar in the fifth minute.
Cunningham was handed a chance to give Dallas in the lead in the 12th when he
was fouled just inside the penalty area by Bobby Boswell but failed to convert
the spot kick.
Houston goalie Pat Onstad bailed out his defender with a diving save, but the
league's top goalie couldn't deny Cunningham again later in the half.
Cunningham avoided Boswell to win the ball about 35 yards out, dribbled around
another Houston player and then slotted perfectly into the right side for his
ninth of the season, which is tied for second in the league.
Neither side was impressive in the second half, with Houston's lowlight coming
in the 74th minute when Brad Davis received a red card while on the bench.
Dallas nearly put the match away in the 86th when Andre Rocha drilled the bar,
but its defense did well against Houston's solid offense, allowing just one
shot that Dario Sala handled.
FCD posted just its third shutout of the season, and will try to build on the
win July 15 at the defending MLS Cup champion Columbus Crew.
Houston returns home Sunday to host the Chicago Fire, who are currently second
in the Eastern Conference.
