Carson, CA (Sports Network) - U.S. Olympic team captain Sacha Kljestan had a
goal and an assist to lead Chivas USA to a 3-1 victory over Real Salt Lake in
Major League Soccer on Saturday night.
Kljestan opened the scoring in the 32nd minute, then assisted on Atiba Harris'
game-winner in the 55th minute. Chivas USA defender Francisco Mendoza, who had
four assists all of last season, assisted on the first two goals.
Alecko Eskandarian, who along with Harris used to play for Real, added Chivas'
third goal in stoppage time.
Chivas (1-0-1), one of just five unbeatens left in MLS through two weeks, also
got some key saves from goalie Brad Guzan to jump Colorado and Los Angeles for
the early lead in the Western Conference.
Real Salt Lake (0-1-1) got its lone goal from Kenny Deuchar in the 57th minute
but couldn't complete the comeback. Real settled for a tie in its opener after
Chicago's Cuauhtemoc Blanco scored in the 92nd minute.
Kljestan made sure Real Salt Lake wouldn't have to wait that long to know its
fate at The Home Depot Center.
Chivas USA striker Maykel Galindo, who led the team with 12 goals last season,
made a nice run in midfield before making a lead pass to the right side to set
up Kljestan's goal.
Kljestan's long run on the right side was rewarded when he met the pass a few
steps inside the penalty area. With RSL goalkeeper Nick Rimando charging off
his line, Kljestan took a quick shot that skimmed off the goalie and into the
Real Salt Lake nearly equalized in the 35th minute, but after Robbie Findley
made a long run down the right and delivered a perfect cross into the box, the
ball was cleared off the line by Chivas' Shavar Thomas with a Real Salt Lake
player on the far post.
Harris, who played 21 games for Real last year, extended the lead after a nice
pass from Kljestan. After Mendoza passed to a streaking Kljestan on the right,
he slid a pass into the middle of the box for Harris to poke into the net.
Deuchar got Real Salt Lake back into the match two minutes later on a perfect
header. Javier Morales took a free kick from the left and sent a pass into the
box. Deuchar rose above the defense to beat Guzan into the left corner.
Guzan redeemed himself with his best save in the 63rd minute, running back to
his line to dive and deflect a Yura Movsisyan shot wide of the left post.
Real Salt Lake had another scoring chance similar to the one in the first half
on another pass through the six-yard box, but this time Chivas' Chris Pozniak,
who just came into the match in the 80th minute, saved the ball off the line.
Eskandarian capped Chivas' win with a breakaway in the final seconds. He was
able to dribble around Nick Rimando before slamming the ball into the net.
Chivas will try to extend its season-opening unbeaten streak April 12 when it
visits Columbus. Real Salt Lake will try to get its first victory when D.C.
United visits on April 12.
