Frisco, TX (Sports Network) - Maykel Galindo came off the bench to save Chivas
USA on Sunday, scoring in the 84th minute of a 1-1 draw against FC Dallas.
Galindo, who led Chivas USA with 12 goals last year, came off the bench in the
55th minute with his side trailing 1-0 and took advantage of a defensive error
by Dallas to score the tying goal.
Chivas USA midfielder Raphael Wicky, a Switzerland international who was added
in the offseason, played a ball from the other side of midfield toward the top
of the penalty area.
Dallas defender Duilio Davino, a Mexican international added in the offseason,
was able to get the first touch on the ball but knocked it into space without
clearing it out of danger.
Galindo ran onto the loose ball just outside the top of the area and blasted a
shot by Davino and through the legs of goalie Dario Sala.
It was a fitting finish for Chivas, the defending Western Conference regular
The Goats fired 22 shots at Sala - including eight on goal - but settled for a
late strike by Galindo as the only thing to show for it.
Rookie Justin Braun, another substitute, nearly gave Chivas a win at Pizza Hut
Park when he ran under a corner kick in the 91st minute but headed it wide as
Sala dove to try and make a save.
Dallas had the first scoring chance of the match in the eighth minute when Abe
Thompson fired a weak shot from 12 yards out that Chivas goalie Brad Guzan was
able to cover up easily.
Chivas forward Atiba Harris, who started in place of Galindo, had an open look
minutes later at the top of the box but Sala pushed the shot wide.
Dallas opened the scoring not longer after when Toja, who scored six goals in
his debut season in the league, beat Guzan into the left side from inside the
Chivas forward Ante Razov, who had 11 goals last season, misfired on a scoring
chance in the 30th minute and Thompson wasted a good chance in the 34th minute
as the score remained 1-0 for the remainder of the first half.
Razov had another scoring chance early in the second half but despite being
wide open, fired a shot directly at Sala. Sacha Kljestan had another shot on
goal for Chivas a minute later but Sala made another stop.
Kljestan had the next good chance for Chivas also but despite beating Sala, he
was denied by the left post 11 minutes into the second half.
After Galindo and Wicky - two players who should start most of the year - came
into the match, Chivas finally broke through.
Wicky, who has made well over 50 appearances for Switzerland, played an simple
long ball down the middle of the field and the bad touch by Davino set up the
tying goal by Galindo.
Galindo didn't waste anytime when he got to the ball, taking a one-touch shot
that Sala couldn't stop.
Chivas USA (0-0-1) hosts Real Salt Lake on Saturday and Dallas (0-0-1) visits
two-time defending champion Houston on April 6.
