Adams stars as Cardinals rout Rockies
Denver, CO (SportsNetwork.com) - Matt Adams went 3-for-5 with a pair of homers and a career-high six RBI, as the St. Louis Cardinals clobbered the Colorado Rockies, 8-0, in the opener of a three-game series at Coors Field.
Lance Lynn (8-5) gave up three hits and fanned seven over eight innings. The right-hander has not yielded more than two runs in each of his last four starts.
Adams singled in two runs in the third, hit a solo homer in the fifth and crushed a three-run blast in the seventh. He's the first Cardinals player with six RBI in a game since David Freese had six on June 7, 2012 at Houston.
Matt Holliday and Jhonny Peralta each drove in a run, as St. Louis won its third in a row following a three-game skid.
Lynn retired 16 batters in a row until Charlie Blackmon singled with two outs in the sixth. Corey Dickerson followed with another hit, but Troy Tulowitzki flied out to right to end the inning.
By that time the Cardinals built a 5-0 lead on Jhoulys Chacin (1-6), who gave up four hits and five runs in six frames in Colorado's seventh straight loss.
Franklin Morales walked Lynn to start the seventh and Matt Carpenter was ruled to have been barely hit by a pitch on a replay review. One out later, Adams homered to right-center.
Holliday doubled in a run in the third and scored on Adams' two-run base hit to right-center.
Peralta's double to center plated Jon Jay in the fourth and Adams homered to right with one out in the fifth for a 5-0 cushion.
Jay made a sliding catch at the center field wall to rob Justin Morneau of extra bases in the seventh.
The Cardinals lost two of their starting pitchers, as Michael Wacha (right shoulder stress reaction) and Jaime Garcia (left shoulder inflammation) were both placed on the 15-day disabled list Monday. In corresponding moves, St. Louis has recalled right-handed pitcher Eric Fornataro and infielder Pete Kozma from Triple-A Memphis ... The Rockies placed catcher Michael McKenry on the bereavement list and selected the contract of catcher Jackson Williams from Triple-A Colorado Springs ... The Cardinals began a 10-game/11-day road trip through the National League West Division.
