GAME NOTES: The College of Charleston Cougars will finish up a short homestand on Wednesday night, as they host the UNC-Wilmington Seahawks in a Colonial Athletic Association clash at TD Arena.
The Seahawks have really been scuffling over the last month, with nine straight losses separating them from their last victory. They are just 6-14 overall, including a ghastly 0-4 mark in league play. A matchup with Towson is next on the schedule.
The Cougars have had an uneven start to their first season in the CAA, with a 2-2 split of their first four league contests. The most recent result was a 72-57 loss to Towson to kick off this brief two-game homestand. They will visit James Madison and William & Mary in their next two bouts.
These two teams have squared off 13 times previously, with Charleston winning nine of them, including a 100-80 triumph in the most recent meeting during the 2008-09 season.
UNCW was set down by Drexel, 79-63, in suffering its ninth straight defeat. The Seahawks led 40-27 at halftime, but recorded only seven field goals over the final 20 minutes to surrender the decision. Craig Ponder came off the bench to score a team-high 16 points in the setback.
The Seahawks are certainly not one of the top offensive teams in the CAA, as they are netting only 64.8 ppg and shooting 40.7 percent from the field. There is not a wealth of scoring punch on the roster, with Cedrick Williams (13.8 ppg, 7.2 rpg) and Addison Spruill (10.5 ppg) the only players averaging in double figures. Williams is also the team leader on the glass, although he had only five boards to go with 11 points against Drexel. Spruill was held scoreless in eight minutes of action in the loss, while Chris Dixon (7.4 ppg) hit for 13 points .
Willis Hall scored 20 points and pulled down 12 rebounds for the College of Charleston against Towson, but the Cougars shot just 33.3 percent from the field as a team as they lost the game. They were also outscored 18-9 off turnovers.
The Cougars have their difficulties producing at the offensive end as well, scoring just 63.5 ppg and shooting 41.1 percent from the floor. However, they have kept themselves in many games by playing well defensively, ranking 24th nationally in scoring defense (62.5 ppg). Hall (11.7 ppg, 9.6 rpg) is a constant double-double threat as the team's leading scorer and the third-best rebounder in the CAA. Anthony Stitt (10.4 ppg) and Adjehi Baru (10.1 ppg, 7.3 rpg) are the only other players averaging in double figures, although Stitt is only connecting on 35 percent from the floor.
Neither of these teams has the offensive firepower to run over the other. However, the Cougars play stingy defense and will be helped by the home crowd.
