GAME NOTES: The Jaguars of IUPUI try to put an end to a lengthy four-game slide tonight, as they challenge the Bradley Braves in non-conference action at Renaissance Coliseum.
Since defeating IU-Northwest by a lopsided score of 88-53, the Jaguars have gone winless and are now just 1-7 on the campaign overall. The team took part in the Las Vegas Invitational and came up empty, most recently bowing to Chattanooga in an 87-76 final last Friday.
As for the Braves, they've had a much more favorable first month of the season, winning four straight out of the chute, and picking up another victory on Saturday. After bowing to both Illinois and Arizona State on the road, Bradley bounced back with a 74-54 win over Texas-Pan American.
The Braves lead the all-time series between the teams by a count of 2-1, with the most recent meeting taking place last season in Indianapolis as IUPUI bowed in a 79-72 final.
IUPUI led the Mocs by two points early in their meeting, but after that it was all down hill as the Jags suffered the double-digit setback. Ja'Rob McCallum tried to give IUPUI a fighting chance with 25 points off the bench in 28 minutes but it simply wasn't enough. Ian Chiles checked in with 15 points and Khufu Najee another 13 for a team that was soundly beaten on the glass, 37-21.
Chiles paces the program in scoring through eight games with his 18.1 ppg, shooting a solid 45.2 percent from the field, while Mitch Patton accounts for another 13.0 ppg and is second on the unit with 6.4 rpg as he too converts 45.2 percent of his field goal attempts for a group that is scoring 69.4 ppg. but giving up 72.0 ppg.
The Braves ripped through Texas-Pan American in the last outings, scoring the first points of the contest and never looking back as they won by 20 points. Bradley knocked down 54.9 percent from the field and at the same time held the opposition to just 33.9 percent, including a dismal 2-of-17 beyond the arc. Walt Lemon produced 26 points, Omari Grier 17 and Ka'Darryl Bell 10, while Chris Blake made up for a scoreless effort by pulling down 11 rebounds.
At the moment, Lemon is not only the leading scorer for the Braves with his 17.4 ppg, he is also first in assists with 31, more than three times as many as his closest teammate. Tyshon Pickett, who has handed out 10 assists, and is tops on the glass with 7.1 rpg, is also second in scoring with 14.6 ppg, followed by Grier with 12.4 ppg.
Playing in a more intimate environment, the Braves should feel even more support from the home town fans tonight as they take care of business against IUPUI.
Sports Network Predicted Outcome: Bradley 72, IUPUI 63
