GAME NOTES: The Youngstown State Penguins have won four of their last five games, but still have some catching up to do in the Horizon League standings as they travel to face the Oakland Golden Grizzlies in conference play at the Athletics Center O'rena.
Youngstown State is 4-3 in Horizon League play this season, and is setting its sights on catching up with conference leader Green Bay (7-1). The Penguins have won four of their last five games, including a 68-67 edging of Wright State in the team's last outing.
Oakland ended a two-game losing skid with a 76-75 win over Illinois-Chicago Saturday in Horizon League action. The Grizzlies have only won three of their last seven contests - all in conference play.
Oakland holds the slim all-time series lead over Youngstown State, 5-4. The Penguins ended the Grizzlies' season last year with a 99-87 victory in the CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament.
Youngstown State barely escaped Wright State in the team's most recent contest, as the Raiders missed a tip-in at the buzzer that would have given them the win. Ryan Weber and Kendrick Perry each netted 18 points to pace the Penguins. Perry connected on 10-of-13 from the free-throw line in the game and added three steals to his stat line. Kamren Belin chipped in 15 points for Youngstown State, which shot 50 percent from the floor.
Perry has proven to be one of the better scorers in the Horizon League this season, as the guard leads the Penguins with 20.8 ppg on 52.5 percent shooting from the field. Perry's 93 assists tops the team, as well as his 59 total steals on the year. Belin is second in scoring with 11.9 ppg, while Bobby Hain and Weber are tied for third at 11 ppg. Hain leads the Penguins in rebounding at 6.3 rpg.
In thrilling fashion, Duke Mondy drove down the length of the court off an inbounds pass, pulled up and buried a 3-point jumper to give the Golden Grizzlies a one-point victory as time expired against UIC. Kahlil Felder led Oakland with 21 points in the game, adding nine assists and five rebounds to his stat total. Travis Bader scored 19, Corey Petros and Mondy each chipped in 11 and Dante Williams scored 10 in the victory. The Grizzlies shot 47.4 percent from the floor.
Bader leads Oakland in scoring this season with 19.1 ppg on only 37 percent shooting. Bader gets it done from the free-throw line however, netting 93.8 percent of his attempts. Petros is second in scoring at 14 ppg, and Mondy is third with 12.1 ppg. Petros tops the squad in rebounding with an 8.4 rpg average, and Felder is the top assists man with 119 this year. The Golden Grizzlies average 73.5 ppg.
Oakland, after struggling to an 0-7 start this season, is still in the Horizon League hunt at 3-4. Although the Golden Grizzlies are home, they'll face a talented Youngstown State team with dangerous scoring and bench depth.
