GAME NOTES: The Delaware Blue Hens have won 13 consecutive games, and will seek a 14th as they travel to face the Towson Tigers in a Colonial Athletic Association tilt at SECU Arena.
Delaware has swept conference competition this season, leading the CAA with a perfect 11-0 record as part of the Blue Hens' 13-game win streak. Delaware is coming off an 81-65 victory over James Madison last Wednesday.
Towson has had plenty of success recently as well. The Tigers have won five of their last six games, including an 85-70 trouncing of William & Mary Saturday. At 8-3 in the conference, Towson sits behind only Delaware.
The Blue Hens lead the all-time series with Towson, 42-29. Delaware edged Towson in the earlier meeting between the two sides on Jan. 25, 83-76.
James Madison proved to be no contest for Delaware Wednesday. The Blue Hens went up at the half, 51-32, and never looked back. Davon Usher, coming off a 42-point effort in his previous matchup with the College of Charleston, netted 34 points against the Dukes, adding eight rebounds as well. Carl Baptiste notched a double-double with 16 points and 11 rebounds in the win, in which the Blue Hens shot 41.9 percent from the floor.
Devon Saddler is the team's leading in scoring this season, despite the incredible surge from Usher lately. Saddler tops the squad with 20.4 ppg on 45 percent shooting from the field. Usher checks in right behind him at 19.4 ppg, hitting 46 percent of his shots. Jarvis Threatt adds 17.9 ppg, and Kyle Anderson chips in 11.1 ppg. Baptiste leads the team in rebounding with 7.7 rpg, and Threatt tops the roster with 107 assists on the year.
Towson connected on 53.6 percent of its shots against William & Mary in both the first and second halves, jumping out to a 41-34 lead at the intermission and cruising in the second frame to victory. Jerrelle Benimon tallied 21 points and 14 rebounds for the double-double, and Mike Burwell led the Tigers with 23 points in the contest. Timajh Parker-Rivera netted 12 points, and Four McGlynn chipped in 11 in the victory.
Benimon has been a true star on this Towson team this season, averaging a double-double with team-highs of 18.6 ppg and 11.6 rpg in 26 games played. His 100 assists is a team best, and so are his 37 blocked shots. Marcus Damas is second to Benimon in scoring at 12 ppg, while Rafriel Guthrie checks in at 11.2 ppg. The Tigers are averaging 72.5 ppg this season.
This is truly the match to see in the CAA this season between the two heavyweights. Each team has a star or two, and fantastic role players to fill in. Towson has been great at home this season, but wherever Delaware goes a victory usually follows. It may be tight, but the Blue Hens likely won't be silenced in this one.
