Fort Wayne, IN (SportsNetwork.com) - Joe Reed scored 20 points on 8-of-10 shooting to go with seven boards as the IUPU-Fort Wayne Mastodons narrowly defeated the Nebraska Omaha Mavericks 86-82 in a Summit League clash at Gates Sports Center.
Mo Evans added 15 points while Joe Edwards had 13 for the Mastodons (17-6, 5-1 Summit), who have won two straight. Steve Forbes chipped in 11 points.
Justin Simmons logged 28 points for the Mavericks (12-9, 2-4), who have dropped two consecutive contests. John Karhoff had 19 points and Devin Patterson dropped 12. Mike Rostampour cleared 12 boards.
Omaha made 51.4 percent of its shots from the field, including 17 points in 17 minutes from Simmons in the first half, as they led 44-38 at the intermission. IPFW made 46.7 percent of its field goal attempts in the period.
The Mastodons came out in the second period and made 57.1 percent of their shots from the floor including 6-of-13 from beyond the arc. The Mavericks connected on just 40 percent of their field goal tries. With 3:07 left the two teams were tied at 78, and from that point IPFW went on a 10-6 run to secure the victory.
The bench for IPFW outscored the Mavericks' reserves 39-12. Omaha lost despite attempting 70 shots, 12 more than the home team.
