GAME NOTES: The Marist Red Foxes lost the first nine games of the season, but are on a roll as of late, winning the last five matchups as they prepare for the Siena Saints in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference action on Friday.
The last two games of the Red Foxes' early season skid were to MAAC rivals. But Marist has since won five straight and two in conference play to pull even in the MAAC with a 2-2 record. The Red Foxes downed Canisius Monday, 65-62, barely edging out the Golden Griffins.
Siena has struggled to string much of anything together, although the Saints have won three of their last four contests. Like Marist, the Saints sport a 2-2 record in MAAC play. Siena is coming off a 62-47 defeat of Rider last Saturday.
Siena leads the all-time series between the two programs, 48-24, in the long- standing rivalry of these New York-based teams. They will meet again on Feb. 14 later this year.
Marist's five-game winning streak ties its longest since the 2007-08 season. The Red Foxes were able to jump out to an early lead on Canisius before the Golden Griffins managed to climb back into contention. Marist was able to hang on for the 65-62 victory behind Khallid Hart's 19 points, nine rebounds and six assists. Chavaughn Lewis also netted 19 points on 7-of-13 shooting from the floor, while Jay Bowie scored 18 on 4-of-8 from 3-point range. The Red Foxes hit 46.9 percent of their shots in the game, including 40 percent from long distance.
Lewis leads the team in scoring this season with 16.7 ppg, and is second on the squad with 4.5 rpg. He tops the roster in steals with 21, but is also responsible for 51 turnovers on the year. Hart is next on Marist with a 12.2 ppg average on 43.1 percent shooting from the floor. Bowie completes the trio of double-digit scorers at 10.4 ppg. The Red Foxes average 62.9 ppg as a team this season.
Siena was able to limit Rider to a season-low 47 total points in Saturday's MAAC win over the Broncs. Brett Bisping netted a career-high 20 points on 7- of-9 shooting, and added seven rebounds in the process. Rob Poole scored 12 points as the second of two scorers in double figures for the Saints. Marquis Wright led the team with five assists in the win. Siena connected on 53.3 percent of its shots from 3-point range in the contest, and made 45.7 percent of its total shots.
Poole is the only player for Siena averaging double-digit scoring totals this season with 15.5 ppg. Poole is also tied for the team lead in rebounding at 6.1 rpg, and is second with 13 steals on the year. Bisping, who has started seven of 15 games this season, comes in at 8.3 ppg and pulls even with Poole at 6.1 rpg. Bisping has connected on 53.4 percent of his shots from the floor already. The Saints average 69.1 ppg this season.
Siena has the homecourt advantage, but it's hard to look past the success Marist is having at the moment. Perhaps the Red Foxes are aware their backs are to the wall.
Sports Network Predicted Outcome: Marist 68, Siena 62
