Tulsa, OK (Sports Network) - Tailback Trey Watts completed a 26-yard touchdown
pass to finish off a third quarter rally as the Tulsa Golden Hurricane edged
the Fresno State Bulldogs, 27-26, in a non-conference battle at H.A. Chapman
Stadium.
Cody Green struggled for Tulsa (3-1), completing only 13-of-37 passes for 202
yards and a touchdown with three interceptions. Jordan James had a breakout
performance with four catches for 84 yards. Alex Singleton led the team's
rushing attack with 56 yards on 18 carries while Thomas Roberson had three
catches for 65 yards and the game winning score. Shawn Jackson had a strong
showing with 11 tackles and a forced fumble as the Golden Hurricane completed
the 13-point come from behind victory.
For Fresno State (2-2), Derek Carr completed 26-of-44 attempts for 231 yards
and a touchdown. Robbie Rouse gained 135 yards and a touchdown on 27 carries
while Josh Harper reeled in seven catches for 115 yards and a score. The
Bulldogs, who came in averaging 515 yards of total offense per game, were held
to just 364 offensive yards in the contest.
Fresno State jumped out to an early lead when Rouse rushed 37 yards for a
touchdown at the 9:43 mark of the opening period. The Bulldogs added another
touchdown less than 20 seconds later as Patrick Su'a returned an interception
20 yards for a score. Quentin Breshears was unsuccessful on the extra point
attempt, which left Fresno State ahead, 13-0.
Tulsa scored its first points just over a minute later when Ja'Terian Douglas
broke away for a 32-yard touchdown run to make it 13-7.
Carr added to Fresno State's lead at the first quarter's 5:28 mark by
connecting with Harper for a 32-yard touchdown pass. Harper's second touchdown
reception of the season gave the Bulldogs a 20-7 advantage heading into the
second period.
The Golden Hurricane began their rally as Keyarris Garrett caught a 31-yard
touchdown pass from Green. Daniel Schwarz added a 24-yard field goal to make it
20-17 going into halftime.
The Bulldogs' defense came up with another big play after the break as Tristan
Okpalaugo returned an interception 21 yards for six. Breshears had his extra
point attempt blocked, causing Fresno State's lead to remain, 26-17.
Tulsa came back and took the lead as Schwarz drilled a 38-yard field goal
attempt and Watts completed a 26-yard halfback pass to Roberson which put the
Golden Hurricane ahead, 27-26, with 2:52 left to play in the third quarter.
Fresno State could did not pass the 50-yard line in the final 15 minutes as it
lost its third road game in a row dating back to last season.
In the evenly matched bout, both sides ran 81 total offensive plays. Fresno
State held a slight, tenth of a yard advantage in average gain per play.
