Chapel Hill, NC (Sports Network) - Bryn Renner completed 27-of-43 passes for
321 yards and two touchdowns to lead the North Carolina Tar Heels to a 27-6
victory over the East Carolina Pirates at Kenan Stadium.
North Carolina (2-2) running back Giovani Bernard, who was coming back from
an injury, put up 50 yards and one TD on 18 carries. Renner's favorite
receiver in the game was Erik Highsmith who had eight catches for 66 yards.
As for East Carolina (2-2), quarterback Shane Carden completed 17-of-30
attempts for 124 yards and was sacked seven times. The Pirates offense could
not get into the end zone all day as the team converted just five of their 16
third-down attempts.
Renner got into a great rhythm early, throwing the ball and connected with
Bernard for a 14-yard touchdown pass to put the Tar Heels up 7-0.
The Pirates responded with a 22-yard field goal by Warren Harvey to put the
score at 7-3.
Midway through the second quarter, UNC kicker Casey Barth hit a 20-yard field
goal that made the score 10-3.
The Pirates came back with a 26-yard field goal by Harvey which made the
score 10-6 at the break.
Renner connected with Sean Tapley for a 62-yard touchdown pass on the first
play of a third quarter drive to put the Tar Heels up 17-6.
On the next possession, Carden fumbled the ball and it was recovered by the
Tar Heels. North Carolina took advantage of the turnover as Bernard punched it
in for a four-yard touchdown run to put the hosts up 24-6.
Barth converted on a 41-yard field goal late in the meeting to conclude the
scoring.
The Tar Heels' defense held the Pirates to only 233 total yards on offense.
