Steelers activate TE Miller, release Dwyer
Pittsburgh, PA (Sports Network) - The Pittsburgh Steelers activated Pro Bowl tight end Heath Miller from the physically unable to perform list and released 22 players, including veteran running back Jonathan Dwyer, in a series of moves designed to get their roster to the NFL-mandated limit of 53 for the start of the 2013 season.
The decision to activate Miller, who tore his ACL and MCL against Cincinnati in Week 16 last season, means the veteran can begin practicing with the team immediately.
Dwyer was the Steelers' first pick in the sixth round of the 2010 draft and led the team in rushing during the 2012 season with 623 yards on 156 carries.
Pittsburgh also waived goodbye to three recent draft picks, nose tackle Alameda Ta'amu, a fourth-round pick in 2012, cornerback Terry Hawthorne, a fifth-round choice in 2013 and wide receiver Justin Brown, a six-rounder in 2013.
Also released was 12-year veteran punter Brian Moorman, a three-time Pro Bowl selection during his time with the Buffalo Bills. Moorman punted for Dallas last season and signed with the Steelers this past offseason as an unrestricted free agent.
Second-year linebacker Brian Rolle and second-year safety Ross Ventrone were also given their walking papers.
The rest of the cuts involved either undrafted rookies or first-year players: cornerbacks Josh Victorian and Devin Smith, tight ends Jamie McCoy and Nathan Overbay, wide receivers Reggie Dunn and Kashif Moore, offensive linemen Mike Golic Jr., Joe Madsen, Chris Hubbard and Joe Long, defensive end Brian Arnfelt, linebackers Marshall McFadden, Alan Baxter and Terence Garvin and running back Alvester Alexander.
The Steelers will begin the 2013 regular season slate on Sept. 8, when they host the Tennessee Titans.
