Bengals promote Guenther to defensive coordinator

Cincinnati, OH ( - The Cincinnati Bengals moved swiftly to fill their defensive coordinator role, promoting Paul Guenther to the position on Thursday.

Guenther has spent nine seasons on Marvin Lewis' staff with the Bengals, the last two as linebackers coach. He has also assisted with special teams and defensive backs during his tenure in Cincinnati.

The Bengals needed a replacement at defensive coordinator for Mike Zimmer, who took the head coaching vacancy with the Minnesota Vikings on Wednesday.

Guenther has also been an assistant in the NFL with the Washington Redskins (2002-03). Lewis was also an assistant with Washington in 2002.

The 42-year-old Pennsylvania native served as head coach in college at his alma mater, Ursinus, from 1997-2001. He was the youngest head coach in college football at age 25 when he took over the Division III program.
