Final Score: Boise State 34, Utah State 23
Logan, UT (SportsNetwork.com) - Joe Southwick threw for 335 yards and two touchdowns as the Boise State Broncos handled the Utah State Aggies, 34-23, in a Mountain West Conference bout at Romney Stadium.
Southwick completed 30-of-44 pass attempts but was also intercepted twice for Boise State (4-2 2-1 MWC), which failed to scored 40 points for the first time this season. Shane Williams-Rhodes had 13 receptions for 150 yards and a touchdown while Jay Ajayi had 109 yards and a score on 22 carries.
Utah State (3-4, 2-1) was without starting quarterback Chuckie Keaton, who tore the ACL and MCL in his left knee last week. In his place Craig Harrison got the start but completed just 7-of-17 pass attempts for 105 yards before being replace by Darell Garretson, who went 9-of-14 for 116 yards and a score and was intercepted twice. Travis Reynolds had five catches for 142 yards and Robert Marshall rushed for 69 yards on 19 carries.
The Broncos claimed a 10-0 lead after the first quarter on a two-yard touchdown run from Ajayi and a 35-yard field goal from Dan Goodale.
The score didn't stay that way once the second quarter started as the Aggies got a one-yard touchdown run from Joey DeMartino less than two minutes into the period.
Southwick was able to extend the Boise State lead with a seven-yard touchdown run less than four minutes later.
Southwick then threw a 24-yard touchdown pass to Aaron Burks late in the second quarter to extend the Broncos' lead to 24-7.
Utah State was able to chip into the deficit before halftime with a 33-yard field goal from Nick Diaz.
Early in the second half, Southwick threw his second touchdown pass of the game on a two-yard toss to Williams-Rhodes.
With 2:29 left in the third quarter, Goodale pushed Boise State to a 34-10 lead with a 39-yard field goal.
Southwick's second interception in the game put points on the board for the Aggies as Nevin Lawson returned an interception off the Boise State signal caller 65 yards for a touchdown. The Aggies were unsuccessful on a two-point conversion attempt after the score. Travis Van Leeuwen caught a four-yard touchdown pass from Garretson with 20 seconds to play but it was not enough for the Aggies.
Boise State had 447 yards of total offense while Utah State finished with 348. The Aggies went just 3-of-15 on third down conversion attempts.
