Final Score: Arkansas State 17, South Alabama 16
Mobile, AL (SportsNetwork.com) - Sirgregory Thornton's three-yard touchdown run with 6:29 remaining in regulation was just enough to push the Arkansas State Red Wolves to a 17-16 victory over the South Alabama Jaguars in a Sun Belt Conference clash at Ladd-Peebles Stadium.
Thornton carried the ball just five times for 15 yards for the Red Wolves (4-4, 2-1 SBC) as they won for the second time in the last three outings. Quarterbacks Adam Kennedy and Fredi Knighten combined to hit on 21-of-25 for 160 yards, the former suffering three sacks on the night.
The Jaguars (3-5, 1-3), the losers of two straight and four of five, were led by Ross Metheny who connected on 15-of-29 pass attempts for 228 yards and an interception.
Following a scoreless first quarter, USA kicker Aleem Sunanon delivered on a pair of field goals from 27 and 19 yards to give the hosts a 6-0 advantage at the break.
In the third frame the Red Wolves finally broke through with a 12-yard touchdown run by Kennedy to take the lead at 7-6.
With 4:40 remaining in the period, South Alabama regained the advantage when Kendall Houston's two-yard scoring run gave the home team a 13-7 edge.
The team's continued to trade scores through the fourth quarter as ASU's Brian Davis booted a 50-yard field goal and Sunanon countered with a 30-yard effort before Thornton's TD run put the Red Wolves over the top.
Arkansas State picked up the win despite being flagged for 11 penalties, leading to a loss of 73 yards, and coming up with just 349 yards of total offense.
